Talks and Debates, Screening and Performances
2 July
19:00 - 23:00 Hosted by: Czech Centre

A film screening followed by a debate chaired by Deyan Sudjic, with Eva Jiricná and other guests

Friday 2 July, 7 pm

The international premiere of a documentary dedicated to the late Czech architect Jan Kaplický, co-founder of London based internationally acclaimed practice Future Systems. The film featuring Brian Clarke, Eva Jiricná, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Václav Havel and the team Future Systems tells the story of Kaplický’s last grand design. The project for the National Library in Prague called the Eye over Prague is radical, exciting and far enough ahead of its time to provoke a fair degree of controversy. For Kaplický, a Czech-born émigré, it also represents a triumphant return to his homeland, a vindication of his uncompromisingly forward-looking philosophy and, eventually, a tragically poetic ending to his remarkable career. After winning the international competition chaired by Zaha Hadid, the popular and much supported design met opposition from the Czech government and the local administration and the fierce battle began (Olga Spátová, Czech Republic, 2010, 90′).

A following debate, chaired by Deyan Sudjic with Eva Jiricná and other guests will focus not only on Jan Kaplicky’s work, but also on the process and struggles of architects to have their visionary and bold designs approved and built.

Booking
The event has been moved to larger venue.

CHEERS:) 2009

“Cheers :)”, organized by CSSA University of the Arts London and co-organised with WE(WestEast) Design, is the first Chinese Art and Design exhibition in London of this size, with the largest number of exhibitors and the most comprehensive different forms of work. These include Fine Art, Fashion Design, Spatial Design, Multimedia Art, Communication Design, Graphic Design, Product Design, Jewellery Design and Photography. This mixture of disciplines, ranging from 2D to 4D, allows different types of media to overlap and interact with each other.

During the exhibition, 40 pieces selected by experts and visitors will be displayed as the tour of Greater China which will be visiting the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Taipei in 2010. The China Tour is called “Reverse Current”. This is the concept of Chinese students flowing between China and the UK, just like the sea, using newly acquired cultural knowledge to stimulate new ideas and as the students return home, their new skills and ideas flow back with them. “Reverse Current” is also a metaphor of the Art and Design industry going up against the odds in the global financial crisis and recession.

Closing date for initial applications - Thursday 1 October 2009

Recently the Commission funded a scoping study commissioned by the Royal Albert Hall about its urban setting and the potential of the northern part of the Royal Commission’s Estate. At the same time, led by the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, a major development of Exhibition Road is taking place.

[To download a copy of the scoping study in pdf format (18MB), you will need to log in. Follow this link, click the key icon and enter these details: Client username: UP_RAH, Client password: rah09].

This year the subject of the Commission’s Fellowship in the Built Environment is Urbanism, specifically to build on the valuable work from this scoping study and Exhibition Road Development, and to offer to many interested parties broad design ideas on how the urban quality of the area can be improved.

There is as yet no clear path on how the work may be taken forward after this study. The Commission hopes that by freely publicising the ideas created by this Fellowship others may be encouraged to progress the next stages and to recognise the value to society of the care and improvement of public spaces. Applicants may wish to offer their ideas on this.

To apply download the application form (in Word) which candidates should complete, together with a submission outlining the proposed project of no more than two pages of A4, plus a CV. Lavishly produced or illustrated submissions are not required. The full application should then be sent preferably by e-mail as a PDF to applications@royalcommission1851.org. Alternatively they can be sent by post to the Royal Commission at the address below.

Up to six of the applicants will be asked to enlarge on their first submission by adding no more than a further six A4 sides. Some of the six will be asked to present their ideas and approach to the judging panel who will then choose one applicant to take their ideas to a further stage over a period of six months with presentations to various bodies. An honorarium for this last stage of £30,000 will be payable.

Design Museum, 01 July - 01 November 2009

Jan Kaplický, who died earlier this year, was the Czech architect responsible for some of the most remarkable buildings that Britain has ever seen. Lord’s cricket ground holds the press box he built with his former partner, Amanda Levete - it was their first major project and won the Stirling Prize.
Kaplický also designed the Selfridges department store in Birmingham, 2003 and yet even more remarkable are the buildings that Kaplický designed, which the world will never see - to say nothing of his stream of ideas for solar powered vehicles, electric cars, jewellery, bikinis and double-decker buses. This exhibition will celebrate the work of a gifted architect and designer.

The international competition to design schools for the areas damaged by the earthquake in 2008, is co-organised by WE(WestEast) Design, UCL (Bartlett) and Sichuan Provincial Institute of Architectural Design.

200 guests from the creative industry and media attended the awards announcement evening including Robin Cross, representative of Jack Pringle, chairman of Development Disaster Relief; Hanwen Liao, representative from China-UK Environment and Resources Association attended the event. Philip Dogg, Chinese expert, BBC senior editor, EX-director of ICA, and Zelin Li, Chairman of Chinese Student and Scholars Association in UK gave speech on the event.

The open jury for the Sichuan School International Conceptual Design Competition was successfully held in The Bartlett School of Architecture UCL on 18th April 2009. UCL Pro-Provost for China, Professor Z. Xiao Guo helped to co-ordinate the event.

The winning schemes are from across the world and the first prize for the Architecture category is from China. The standard of entry was high and both the winners and commendations were very deserving. The winning entries not just provide pratical solutions, but also take into account the need of students and demonstrate the potential of creative and contemporary design intervention in schools.

The entire process of the jury, chaired by Professor CJ Lim, was open to the public. The other jury members were Arjun Kaicker (Partner, Foster + Partners), Ching Lao (Senior Engineer, ARUP), Yan Ma (School Expert, Representative from Chinese Embassy London), Gerrard O’Carroll (The Royal College of Art), Nicholas Rhodes (Central Saint
Martins), and Dr. Hongxing Zhang (Senior Curator, V&A). It ensured a very fair process and provided a unique opportunity for the public and the students at audience to participate.

The competition has definitely raised public’s awareness of sichuan’s situation and has provided for design professionals the key issues in school design to debate in the future. The result of the competition will be passed to the local authorities in Sichuan. Hopefully the competition will encourage the local authorities to create forward thinking solutions to rebuilding after the earthquake which perhaps will inspire the world in return.
