Czech Republic: The Eye Over Prague & Jan Kaplický
Building Centre
Talks and Debates, Screening and Performances
2 July
19:00 - 23:00 Hosted by: Czech CentreA film screening followed by a debate chaired by Deyan Sudjic, with Eva Jiricná and other guests
Friday 2 July, 7 pm
The international premiere of a documentary dedicated to the late Czech architect Jan Kaplický, co-founder of London based internationally acclaimed practice Future Systems. The film featuring Brian Clarke, Eva Jiricná, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Václav Havel and the team Future Systems tells the story of Kaplický’s last grand design. The project for the National Library in Prague called the Eye over Prague is radical, exciting and far enough ahead of its time to provoke a fair degree of controversy. For Kaplický, a Czech-born émigré, it also represents a triumphant return to his homeland, a vindication of his uncompromisingly forward-looking philosophy and, eventually, a tragically poetic ending to his remarkable career. After winning the international competition chaired by Zaha Hadid, the popular and much supported design met opposition from the Czech government and the local administration and the fierce battle began (Olga Spátová, Czech Republic, 2010, 90′).
A following debate, chaired by Deyan Sudjic with Eva Jiricná and other guests will focus not only on Jan Kaplicky’s work, but also on the process and struggles of architects to have their visionary and bold designs approved and built.

CHEERS:) 2009
‘One hundred emerging Chinese artists and designers in London make their first collective voice heard.’
Dates: 19th - 23rd November 2009
Venue: Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, LondonCHEERS:) 2009
“Cheers :)”, organized by CSSA University of the Arts London and co-organised with WE(WestEast) Design, is the first Chinese Art and Design exhibition in London of this size, with the largest number of exhibitors and the most comprehensive different forms of work. These include Fine Art, Fashion Design, Spatial Design, Multimedia Art, Communication Design, Graphic Design, Product Design, Jewellery Design and Photography. This mixture of disciplines, ranging from 2D to 4D, allows different types of media to overlap and interact with each other.
During the exhibition, 40 pieces selected by experts and visitors will be displayed as the tour of Greater China which will be visiting the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Taipei in 2010. The China Tour is called “Reverse Current”. This is the concept of Chinese students flowing between China and the UK, just like the sea, using newly acquired cultural knowledge to stimulate new ideas and as the students return home, their new skills and ideas flow back with them. “Reverse Current” is also a metaphor of the Art and Design industry going up against the odds in the global financial crisis and recession.

Urban Design: Ideas for The Royal Albert Hall
Closing date for initial applications - Thursday 1 October 2009
Recently the Commission funded a scoping study commissioned by the Royal Albert Hall about its urban setting and the potential of the northern part of the Royal Commission’s Estate. At the same time, led by the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, a major development of Exhibition Road is taking place.
[To download a copy of the scoping study in pdf format (18MB), you will need to log in. Follow this link, click the key icon and enter these details: Client username: UP_RAH, Client password: rah09].
This year the subject of the Commission’s Fellowship in the Built Environment is Urbanism, specifically to build on the valuable work from this scoping study and Exhibition Road Development, and to offer to many interested parties broad design ideas on how the urban quality of the area can be improved.
There is as yet no clear path on how the work may be taken forward after this study. The Commission hopes that by freely publicising the ideas created by this Fellowship others may be encouraged to progress the next stages and to recognise the value to society of the care and improvement of public spaces. Applicants may wish to offer their ideas on this.
To apply download the application form (in Word) which candidates should complete, together with a submission outlining the proposed project of no more than two pages of A4, plus a CV. Lavishly produced or illustrated submissions are not required. The full application should then be sent preferably by e-mail as a PDF to applications@royalcommission1851.org. Alternatively they can be sent by post to the Royal Commission at the address below.
Up to six of the applicants will be asked to enlarge on their first submission by adding no more than a further six A4 sides. Some of the six will be asked to present their ideas and approach to the judging panel who will then choose one applicant to take their ideas to a further stage over a period of six months with presentations to various bodies. An honorarium for this last stage of £30,000 will be payable.
